Kim the Delusional #1 is a comic written and drawn by Bill McKay with colors by Sanju Nivangune and letters by Justin Birch. A woman with an assortment of weapons goes on a journey to topple a tyrant. This is a post-apocalyptic story with zombie-like creatures and Mad Max vibes starring a foul-mouthed lead. The leading lady is Kim, a former employee at Teasers 2 who now finds herself fighting zombies with some regularity. While there are other characters with personality none are featured nearly as prominently as Kim. The story is straightforward with Kim trying to kill somebody but her story is interspersed with flashbacks from before everything went south. This takes place in a world with intelligent zombies who can think and hold conversations. The action here is very bloody and gory which is the norm for media featuring zombies. The pacing is fast at first but slows down during flashbacks due to a few wordy pages and a lot more information to soak in. There are some intense moments here but this an upbeat story overall. The dialogue is snappy, witty, and insult-filled with plenty of back-and-forths. This is an exciting and eye-catching comic with a familiar theme that has a boisterous and talkative lead that you’ll want to see again.
The art here is thick, smooth, and a bit glossy with a wide range of colors. The scenery in the post-apocalyptic worlds is mostly abandoned building in shades of brown while in the past we see a few palm trees but things mostly take place inside and around buildings and in alleys. The atmosphere feels a bit bubbly as the art seems to pop off the page. The main location is the Teasers 2 but the story moves all over the place. The backgrounds are either blurred or detailed and when blurred they bring more focus to the characters. The expression level here a bit higher than average as these character like to wear their emotions on their face, with the majority of looks are fear or anger-based. Emotions don’t always come across well as the faces can be a bit stiff. The zombies have green skin with some having horns coming out of their skulls. The equipment here ranges from axes and blades to guns and bats. There are a few action scenes of varying length that are easy to follow. They are all bloody and get very gory when organs making appearances. The outfits on the ladies here are revealing and tight, with sharp shoulder pads added in the post-apocalypse.
