Kristy Kringle #1 is a comic written by Marat Mychaels and illustrated by Matthew Weldon. The elves have turned on Santa Claus and the future of Christmas is in jeopardy! This is a story that puts a spin on the Santa Claus mythos and in doing so adds some excitement and suspense. The main character here is Old Saint Nick who finds himself at the mercy of his former workers. His wife Carol is also present and attempting to battle against this uprising. And last but not least we have the title character Kristy Kringle who is their last hope at ending all of this. The story begins in the thick of this rebellion with some intense animosity and anger. The action here is very bloody with some hard hits. The pace is a bit fast as these urgent situations require quick moves. The tone is serious but there are still some lighter moments. The dialogue here is righteous for the Clauses and villainous for the elves. There aren’t any wordy pages here. This is a debut comic that takes a beloved character and puts them in a rough situation while introducing someone new and interesting to help save the day.
The art style here is definitely reminiscent of the 90’s and has a light feel. The coloring is realistic with plenty of red and green which can be expected. The scenery is snow-covered from trees to the ground. You can feel the chillyness coming off the page. The main location is Santa’s workshop but the story does move away from the North Pole. There is about a 50-50 chance of the backgrounds on close-ups containing part of the scene like broken toys in the workshop or mounds of snow. The expression level here is above-average as looks change from panel-to-panel. The emotional range isn’t too wide as anger and determination are the primary feelings expressed. The faces have detail-filled features but can occasionally look a bit uncanny. The action here is all physical and bloody with the violent scenes not lasting too long.
