Lethal Challengers: Kat #1 is a comic created by Marcel Dupree and Joshua Metzger. This story centers on two beings, a(and I’m just now realizing this) cat woman named Kat, and an elephant man named Tusk. It appears I read the whole comic without noticing her ears. Moving on, this tale takes place in a world that is more futuristic than cyberpunk, it reminds me a bit of Star Wars. There are flying vehicles, space ships, and dangerous. Kat and Tusk are both bounty hunters who are required to work together on what should turn out to be a big payday. The characters are interesting and the backstory hints we can seem like they’ll be heavy. The dialogue is good and the back-and-forth is realistic and snarky. Debut comics are normally full of introductions and help give us a glimpse of the tone for the series. Based off this beginning it seems like we’re in for an exciting time.
Location, location, location. This comic has a few that assist in giving us a bit more insight into our characters. The first place we see Kat(which I won’t spoil) will set a specific tone that will help us understand her a little better. The contrast of the high-rise buildings and the seedier parts of the city show us how Kat and Tusk’s operations are viewed in a wider light. Planet Alfar looks rough and unforgiving, and very dark. Sometimes these places are more than just background art. When it comes to the characters you’ll very rarely see a race more than once. Quite a few of these creatures have body modifications that I’d love to know the story behind. Tusk does have a face, but it’s an elephant head so expressions are limited. Kat on the other hand has a wide range of looks and faces she makes throughout the issue. Her outfit is pretty interesting, as in this world people dress like it’s 80 degrees Fahrenheit or snowing outside.
“Is this worth reading?”
Yes.
“Would I like this?”
Fans of stories based in the underworld and rough-and-tough characters would like this. And if you like the world of Star Wars(without the Force) you might want to give this a look.
“What would this comic’s film rating be?”
PG-13.
“Could I get a quote from the comic?”
“You really know how to instill confidence.”
