Liza Ray #1 is a comic created by Dushan Suresh Silva. A woman that has an interesting relationship with death finds herself facing it frequently. This is a sci-fi story with a hint of the supernatural that doesn’t shy away from getting gritty and nasty. Our leading lady is Liza Ray, a woman in a perpetually unhappy state who has a series of unfortunate events take place in her life. The plot consists of her going through day while being hounded by some being she’s had previous dealings with. There are flashbacks to explain everything. The violence comes from many different sources and isn’t gory but can be hard to watch. Things are a bit fast-paced but it slows down when it needs to. The dialogue is modern and it is mostly Liza Ray’s thoughts as she goes through these situations. Some pages can get a little heavy with the words but the sentences are generally short so it reads quickly. This is an intriguing debut issue about a woman with a haunting past she is trying to leave behind.
This is a gritty-looking comic that gives off a grimy vibe with a decent amount of colors. The main location of this comic is a back alley in a seemingly bad part of town but we’ll also visit some homes and a courtroom. The only whose face we see consistently is Liza Ray’s and her main expression is anger. She attempts a few other looks but those don’t come across as well. Her face is drawn well enough but the quality sometimes drops when she isn’t as close. Bodies look good for the most part though they can occasionally have odd proportions. The creature we see frequently sort of looks like Nemesis from Resident Evil. The action here is normally either physical or with a gun. The scenes tend to be short and sweet so you won’t get lost. The dress here is pretty reasonable though she does wear a fishnet bra that is see-through at one point.
