Luminous #1 is a comic created by Ramon Govea and Jacqueline Holland, and published by Myth Division. Let me give you a quick summary of the overarching story: imagine a world full of magic…and capitalism. That’s the backdrop to a story about a few people from different sects attempting to fix the same problem more or less. Our three main characters are: Elazar, a male librarian, a red-headed priestess whose name has yet to be said aloud, and a dreadlocked black woman who has an affinity with daggers. It appears that the main goal of this issue is to lay the groundwork for future entries and it does a good job at that. It even ends on a cliffhanger. Though a few pages are word-heavy and might require some rereads to fully understand, for the most part this comic goes by pretty steadily. This is a high fantasy comic and that usually means(it does here) that people speak a bit more proper tone. Magic stuff happens as well. This is a strong first issue; let us hope that what comes next keeps up the pace.
From a library to a bathhouse to some barracks, this comic just can’t sit still. Locations standout and assist in setting the various scenes. I feel as though the potential for expression with this art style is great, yet the only ones we really see are shock, anger, and the occasionally smile. But it does do them well. The faces are well-drawn and distinguishable; there is only one instance I saw of anything resembling face sameness. There is also a large number of different hairstyles here, besides baldness I don’t think I saw any duplicates. This comic appears to have a Roman influenced theme, judging by the abundance of togas, but there is a clear disregard for clothes overall. The supernatural effects look great on the page, but we just aren’t shown enough. The action shots are drawn with high detail and nice flow. While there are a few topless shots, for the most part the disdain for clothes is shared amongst all genders.
