Miss Mass #1 “The Dame In Black” is a comic created by Aram Khachatryan. “I wear my sunglasses at night.” The first words in this comic brought to my mind the song by Federation featuring E-40 called “I Wear My Stunna Glasses At Night”, but a quick Google search told me it was probably a reference to the Corey Hart song. Moving on! This is the second issue in the Miss Mass series as there exists an issue #0 which is a slideshow video with voiceovers and music. Our story takes in a formerly broken cyberpunk world that isn’t all the way fixed yet. We start off with our heroine Massy giving us some exposition on what happened in the world from then to now. The main takeaway is that females are not considered human and have all the great benefits associated with that. When a woman is seen being chased and shot at by some police officers Massy decided to intervene, and that’s where this adventure kicks off. This is a setup issue so its primary objective is to whet your appetite, and it does a decent job of that. Action women, shady men, and surprising identities, this comic has a lot.
The people in this comic are drawn excellently. Physically realistic, decently expressive faces, and unique outfits. And well-drawn abs. This is a cyberpunk story so the architecture and various pieces of scenery must evoke a certain kind of energy. This comic has it all. The tall buildings overlooking destitute slums, the bright colors making everything look like a billboard, and the futuristic currently unexplained technologies. It is very aesthetically pleasing. I’m not as well-versed in art as I should be so I can’t exactly describe the coloring here, but it’s not what you normally see and it looks good.
SN: This comic is the whole reason I read Kickstarter comics now. I saw an ad for this on Instagram and wanted to see what it was about so I helped fund it back in March, and that sent me in a tailspin that led to me pledging to 57(as of August 12, 2021) different campaigns. So being able to read this comic made me happy for reasons other than the content contained within.
“Is this worth reading?”
Yes.
“Would I like this?”
If you like women-led stories and people fighting the system you should give this peek. Also for cyberpunk fans in need of a fix.
“What would this comic’s film rating be?”
R. Mainly for an early scene.
“Could I get a quote from the comic?”
“She probably totally can! This woman is jacked and pissed AF!!!”
