Mother Trucker #1: The Shine is a comic written and drawn by “The Animal” Bob Anger with colors by Tatto Caballero. In a world where truck drivers are pro wrestlers one woman is determined to be at the top. This is a sci-fi tale taking place in the far-off future where 18-wheelers fly and contracts are fought over in a ring. Our leading lady for this story is a woman named Suzy Q who is a truck driver with a baby and who so happens to be very good at wrestling. We meet some other characters like a talking robot and big rig drivers with unique gimmicks. The story sees Suzy Q attempt to meet up with her husband in Houston but things get explosive and memories get lost. The action here is mostly pro wrestling-based with chops, suplexes, and stiff punches. While Suzy is a brawling type she does have some seductive moments. Just about everyone in this story talks like an 80’s wrestler. I was reading some of the dialogue in a Macho Man Randy Savage voice. When Suzy’s robot companion speaks it is normally a lot at once, so there are more than a few wordy pages here. But dialogue from the more human characters is easy to understand except for when the commentators use big words to describe the carnage they see. This is a great debut issue for a sci-fi pro wrestling story that we just don’t see enough of.
This comic has a gritty look to it has an overabundance of eye candy for those who like to look deeper. There is a nice range of colors here but nothing too crazy; it’s like they wanted to give it the color palette of an older comic. This comic moves across many different locations from a truck stop to a bar to a supermarket. All of these places seem like more than just set dressing with all the details that can be seen in them. Now if you know anything about 80’s wrestling you know that they liked to emote with their whole upper body, and this comic is true to that. From the intense grimaces with bug-eyes to the gratuitous flexing, we’ll have no issues deciphering how these characters feel. The faces here are well-drawn down to the teeth with some extra attention paid to the eyes. Some of the fellas have the same basic face structure but with the various amounts of face paint and scars you’ll be able to tell everyone apart. The bodies are extremely muscular on all genders but like in the 80’s it is lot more excessive for the men. The action here is wrestle-based but it does get gnarly and a bit gory at points. All the fight scenes are easy to follow. The outfits here are either trucker influenced or part of their gimmick. Our leading lady does engage in strategic nudity and she is naked at certain points outside of that. Despite this she really isn’t sexualized by the other characters. There is a sexualized robot that is not what you expect.
