Mutiny: Black Girl Magik #2 is a comic written by Kristal Adams with art by Asiah Fulmore. Moriya finds herself in a strange world arguing with a talking hammer. This is a supernatural science fiction comic with violence, a bit of mystery, and references to black culture. The leading lady for this tale is Moriya, she is a 29 year-old woman who worked as a dating coach on Earth but is now in possession of a talking hammer with supernatural properties. This story begins right after the events of the last issue with Moriya stressing and freaking out about what she just witnessed, and the fact that a hammer talks. Moriya begins walking around while believing that she is dreaming while the hammer is attempting to give her some important information about the dangerous situation she is in. This takes place in a world with similarities to earth but less modern dress. The violence here is mostly physical but there isn’t any blood or gore. The pacing here is steady overall with some slower moments due to exposition. The tone here is like a sci-fi fish-out-of-water movie with a good amount of discovery and questions. There are some intense moments due to danger and violence. The dialogue here is very conversational with a lot of back-and-forth and comedic quips with references to black culture. There is also some narration by Moriya which tends to come in the form of quick comments. There aren’t any word-heavy pages. This is an interesting sequel issue that gives us more details on the world and shows Moriya in different and more dangerous situations.
The art here is softly detailed with a watercolor vibe and it has strong lighting and shading. The coloring is overall realistic(when possible) with a lot of darks, greys, and faded colors. For natural scenery we have a forest full of shrubbery with the sun peeking through. The main location for this story is a bar full of people. The backgrounds tend to have a bit of blur to them and usually show the surroundings. The expression level here is high as Moriya doesn’t hide how she feels. The emotions here range from shock and fear to anger and confusion. The faces have strong features and they show the different expressions very clearly. The mystical effects tend to have a glow to them. The violence sometimes involves weapons but it is mostly physical. There isn’t any blood or gore. The action scene is of a decent length and it flows smoothly.
