Mythica #8 is a comic created and illustrated by Matt Campbell. A brief respite from the violence and horror is cut short when familiar enemies reappear. This issue takes place in Scotland in the area near and including Castle MacDracken. If you are currently unaware, the three leads of this series are Kimberly Bradshaw, Riley Scott, and Magnus MacDracken; while most of these issues tend to have a strong focus on at least two of them, this issue is pretty much all about Magnus. The plot consists of him going around the town and meeting with some old friends and delivering bad news. This is pretty somber throughout until we near the final third where things get very hairy. There is a decent amount of action here with quite a few variations on how it is applied. This story moves at a slower pace than average but due to the tone I believe it was necessary. When Magnus talks some of the words are spelled differently so they can evoke a Scottish accent I think? And a few pages are wordy but that was bound to happen with this kind of story. This is a an issue that touches on much earlier events and provides a bit of closure and recognition while not forgetting current threats.
This comic is drawn with realism in mind so it doesn’t look at all cartoony. It has a decent amount of colors but they never seem too bright which add to the overall dark tone of this series. The locations we see are the Scotland countryside, a town and tavern with some nice stonework, and the aforementioned castle and its courtyard. This comic is decently expressive but it won’t seem that way sometimes because Magnus is a bit stoic so the only emotion that consistently comes across his face is anger. The faces have high amounts of detail and my only knock against them is that sometimes the eyes look bit askew. The action gets bloody very quick and is gruesome. The action scenes are simple to follow though occasionally you’ll have to fill in the gaps. The outfits are mostly kilts and dresses, though one enemy sports an outfit for a much warmer environment.
