Mythica #9 is a comic written and illustrated by Matt Campbell with interior color by Chuck Michael and Obach. Magnus continues his battle against these vampires. This is a supernatural comic that is all about the violence with a little bit of drama. The main man for this story is the Magnus MacDracken, he is a member of the Scottish Black Watch and he has recently returned home to Scotland. This story picks up right where the last issue left off with Magnus battling a group of vampires. The fight has grown deadlier and more desperate as the number of opponents drops. The violence here is very bloody, brutal, and gory with frequent gruesome attacks. The pacing here is faster than average as this is combat-heavy. The tone is serious and aggressive with an eerie and cold vibe. The intensity is very high throughout due to the violence. The dialogue is in English with a Scottish talking style as well as some slang. There is narration and no word-heavy pages; it’s the opposite if anything. This is an exciting and very violent issue with a story that focuses on the combat prowess of Magnus by putting him up against extremely dangerous foes.
The art here is drawn in a detailed, modern style with strong lighting and shading, as this takes place at night. The color palette features a lot of gray, brown, and darker tones overall. This takes place entirely indoors so aside from a quick, early look at the moon there isn’t much natural scenery. The location for this tale is a two-story home with stone walls that accidentally became a battleground. The panel backgrounds usually show the immediate surroundings which adds some extra weight to the different scenes. The expression level here is high as this fight takes a lot out of everyone. The common emotions here are anger, rage, fear and looks of pain. The faces are very detailed, all the way down to the teeth, which helps all the different expressions come across strongly. The weapons used here include from guns, maces, and hammers. The violence here is very brutal and gruesome with significant amounts of blood and gratuitous gore. This entire comic is basically one long action scene with a smooth flow.
