No Spell Lasts Forever #3 is a comic written by Sarah Cooke with art and colors by Eze Di Savino. Rosette puts her plan to corrupt Chief Velez into motion. This is a supernatural comic with drama, mob vibes, and a main cast full of women. The leading lady here is Rosette Diamant/Erma, she is a hitwoman who uses magic to get the job done. She works for the mob boss Cutler Gray whose main rival is his ex-wife Vic. Rosette has made a deal with the devil that requires her to corrupt one truly good soul. The man trying to keep the city safe is Chief Velez, he is a single father with a young daughter. Rosette has a sister named Elspeth who is hunting her down to bring her to trial. The story begins with Rosette presenting a new plan of action to her boss in which she’ll get close to the police in order to weed out Vic’s men. She then heads to the station to talk things out with Chief Velez. There is only one instance of violence here and it isn’t directed at anyone. The pacing here is slower-than-average as there can be a lot to read. The tone can feel a bit noir with a dramatic air. There are about a couple intense moments. The dialogue is mainly conversational with a lot of snarky back-and-forth and some poetic-like narration from Rosette. There is one word-heavy page and others that get close. This is a calm-before-the-storm issue that pushes the story forward by raising the stakes and fleshing out some of the characters.
The art here is drawn in a smoothly detailed pulp-style with thick lines. The color range here is decent with a lot of gray and dark tones with frequent purple and pink. This story takes place almost entirely indoors with rare sightings of natural scenery. The main location is the police station as this is where Rosette does most of her work but there are scenes at homes and mob-controlled places. The backgrounds usually show the different locations which add some extra oomph to the moments. The expression level here is a tick below average as a number of these characters rarely change their looks. The emotions here consist of happiness with some anger and irritation. The faces here have a decent amount of detail and generally help the expressions come across clearly. There is some slight face sameness here. The magical effects are bright and usually pink and they tend to standout whenever they appear. There is only one action scene and it is all in one panel.
