Notti & Nyce Red Sonja Vampirella #1 is a comic written by Marat Mychaels and Dolan Waddick with art by a combination of six people. Notti and Nyce must traverse dimensions in order to catch a couple of thieves. This is a crossover between three different properties and we get a good look at some of these characters in their distinctive environments. The main stars of this tale are Notti & Nyce, two women skilled in combat who have worked together for a while. Also making prominent appearances are Red Sonja, a warrior with a strong sense of justice and Vampirella, a vampire who is more of a protector than a predator. The story begins with them getting their orders and from there the pair is split up, with Notti heading to the world of Red Sonja and Nyce to Vampirella’s. There is a lot of bloody and dismemberful violence here. The pace is steady and the tone is serious and desperate as these women are fighting to survive. Notti and Nyce’s dialogue is more modern and full of quips but Red Sonja has her serious not-playing-around tone. I haven’t read enough Vampirella to know whether or not she is speaking like she normally would, but going off context I think she is. There a couple wordy pages and thick text bubbles here. This is an exciting crossover that showcases these characters in-and-out of their element while giving us some unique, and sometimes funny, interactions.
The art here will remind some of you of 70’s comics and it boasts a wide range of colors. The scenery here changes depending on which character is being focused on; these different areas are very specific to Red Sonja and Vampirella. The atmosphere does a good job of attempting to match these characters as well. While one primary location is a battlefield the other is a downtown area in a city. The expression level here is above-average as these ladies wear their emotions on their sleeves. The range is decent but the main look is that of anger/determination as they are consistently in combat or dangerous situations. The feelings conveyed are usually easy to decipher. The faces here are hit-or-miss. Sometimes the eyes seem too far apart, noses change size and make them look like cats, there is just an overall lack of consistency. The bodies tend to be proportional though a couple panels might make you look twice. The action here is very bloody with some gruesome attacks and the scenes are lengthy with many panels and notable moments. All of the women here have revealing outfits, which is pretty much a core part of their characters.
