On Call Heroes #2 is a comic written by Tonicmole with art by Jakub Sebesta. Kierra has her suspicions about the burger joint that just opened across the street. This is a science fiction superheroine comic that is parts mystery and parts fast-food comedy with some violence thrown in. The leading lady here is Kierra, she has super-strength and is indestructible. She looks for ways to make money with her primary job being at the Big Burger restaurant. Nora is her friend and roommate who has super-intelligence. These two ladies along with a few others have formed the On Call Heroes, which is a service people can call if they need help from superheroes. This story begins with Kierra and Nora sitting on the couch watching TV when they see a commercial for the restaurant Circus Burger. Nora pokes fun at the fact Kierra’s job has competition and while she doesn’t care her boss immediately calls her and asks her to come in as this constitutes a “Burger Emergency”. This takes place in a world where superpowered beings are becoming less and less rare to see. The violence here features some hard hits but no blood or gore. The pacing is steady and the tone is comedic with a fast-food mystery vibe. There are a few violent and dramatically intense moments. The dialogue is very conversational with a lot of back-and-forths, mid-battle quips, insults, all spoken in a modern talking style. There are no word-heavy pages here. This is a funny and exciting issue that sees this superheroine-filled team attempt to get to the bottom of this fast-food mystery. There is a one-page bonus story that stars Possum Girl.
The art here is drawn in a lightly rough, detailed modern style that is in black-and-white. As this takes place in and around restaurants in the middle of a city there isn’t any natural scenery. There are only two main locations here: Big Burger and Circus Burger. Both of these restaurants have similar, standard layouts and various areas are shown including kitchens and backrooms. The backgrounds usually show the actual surroundings and what looks like a gradient color is actually the wall. The expression level here is a bit below average as these characters don’t react very strongly to what goes on. Emotions seen include anger, shock, annoyance, and the occasional smile. Faces here have a decent to average amount of detail with most of the looks being though sometimes you won’t know if they’re emoting or not. There is some face sameness here but if you’re paying attention to the hair and outfits you shouldn’t get confused. The violence here is pretty much all physical though some weapons are introduced. There are some hard-hits but no blood, gore, or gruesomeness. There is one primary action that is a bit lengthy with a smooth flow and a higher amount of panels per page.
