Ophelia the Wicked #1 is a comic created by Terrell Culbert with art by Ram Sandoval. A woman is cursed with power she didn’t ask for and attempts to make a life out of it. This extra-thick issue is separated into two chapters; the first one throws us right into the action and the second one gives us a look at the surrounding story. The star of this tale is a woman known as Ophelia the Wicked, she is the guardian of something called the Spell Almanac and this grants her access to an as of yet undefined power. A couple other prominent characters we see are Merlin(yes that one) and Viviane, better known as the Lady of the Lake. Chapter one follows private eye Ophelia as she handles a case and the second chapter is a bunch of family drama turned violent. And backstory! This story has a bunch of action both magical and physical. The conversations are witty and easy to follow but at certain points the language used might lose you. The on-page letters are kind of big but rest assured, this comic has no wordy pages. This is a tale about a woman just trying to live with the powers she’s been given, but others aren’t making it easy.
This art has a sort of thickness to it that you might see in a cartoon and it works well here. I like the way this comic uses shadows and the colors have a sort of pop to them. Quite a few locations are visited and though we get a good look at them but sometimes when the action picks up the background can end up being a solid color. Ophelia has big “I’m done” energy so her main expression is something akin to Raven from Teen Titans(the OG show, not the sin that is GO). But you will see her get angry, smile a bit, and then return to her stale face. You don’t see too much detail in the face but that’s just the style of this comic. And most of the characters have significant parts of their faces are obscured by hair. The magic effects look like a cross between ghosts and Dragon Ball Z and it looks neat. The action scenes hit-heavy and flow very well. Ophelia does get naked, but for non-sexual reasons.
“Is this worth reading?”
Yes.
“Would I like this?”
If you like supernatural tales mixed with myths and starring a woman using powers they did not want this is perfect for you.
“What would this comic’s film rating be?”
R. Nudity mostly.
“Could I get a quote from the comic?”
“You are merely a man. Only God can judge me.”
