P.O.M. #1 is a comic created Marcel Dupree and Joel Cotejar. Real quick, think of any celebrity who is famous for basically nothing. Now imagine if they had superpowers. Enter Britney Armstrong, a socialite who is the daughter of Strongman. A few of her powers are flight, super-strength, and very bad PR. This is a world of superfolk so we see a bunch of other superpowered people but we don’t get a very close look at them. This story has two main plot threads: A very evil man about to be sentenced for his crimes and Britney dealing with another court case. Though they start off separate I have a strong(heh) feeling everything will get mixed up soon. This issue has a good amount of action and we get to see some interesting powers. The dialogue is nice and realistic and never gets over the top. A few pages can go a little overboard on the word count but it’s an easy read so the pace isn’t bogged down much. This is a comic that gives us a look at superheroes from an angle rarely seen. There is also contained in this comic The Unit Part 1, a story taking place in the same world as POM and Warbound and dealing with a super team.
This comic uses thick dark outlines heavily. This isn’t something I would normally highlight but it stands out. This is a well-colored comic with decent shadowing. We get small glimpses of building interiors but for the most part our backdrop will be tall buildings. The expressiveness showcased is above-average but sometimes characters will seem to have no reaction to situations that are out of the ordinary. The faces are well-drawn, which helps prevent characters from fading into the background. Most of the super suits we see are just high-tech armor with samurai and Medieval influences. We see some nice on-page effects as the result of people using their powers or weapons. The action is mostly straight-forward but it might get confusing as it the flow gets broken up a bit.
