Popsinger (One-Shot) is a comic created and written by Christopher Elston and Chassity Lassiter with art by Halil Mete. A young girl dreams of becoming a pop star and sadly gets her wish. This is a relatively short tale told from a somber and regretful perspective by our leading lady Stacie. Stacie starts off this story young and full of aspirations with talent to boot. The story follows her journey from a rookie unknown to one of the biggest names in the game. This plot starts in the present after which we see a very long flashback that details precisely how she got here. There is some action here primarily of the bloody sort. It also gets salacious as one might imagine famous people can be. The dialogue is pretty straightforward but the real gold is in the voiceovers during the flashback. They are so eerie and ominous that they’ll have you looking deeper into each scene. Some of the pages are a bit wordy but it’s mostly conversational so it doesn’t read long. This is an intriguing story that will get you hooked and hungry for the end.
This comic is drawn in black-and-white with great use of shadows. I don’t think the atmosphere in this story would hit the same if this was drawn with color. The location of the scene changes about every other page with it hitting the places you’d assume a singer would go like auditions, the concert stage, and a fancy party. This comic showcases above-average expressions that really help you feel certain moments of the story. The faces are drawn with enough detail for you to notice the slight uneasiness and what’s really behind the smile. The action in this comic is very extensive but it is very important and bloody when it does appear. The outfits here are very consistent with your average pop star like Katy Perry or Ariana Grande.
“Is this worth reading?”
Yes.
“Would I like this?”
If you like chilling stories starring women going from rags-to-riches and that have a Twilight Zone vibe this is for you.
“What would this comic’s film rating be?”
R. A little too sexy and bloody for the kids.
“Could I get a quote from the comic?”
“But you…you got it. Get out while you can!”
