Saving the World #1 is a comic written and illustrated by Tonicmole and published by Tonic Comix. This comic might be one of the more realistic takes on randomly being bestowed super powers. This is the story of a 19-year old named Kierra who is a comic book geek with no social life. While walking home from work one day she is teleported to a random place in the city. Upon waking up she discovers she is naked and makes mad dash to her house. She soon discovers she has been granted abilities and immediately puts a plan in motion. Most of the text in this story is just Kierra’s inner thoughts so this kinda reads like a noir, it even has that genre trademark of self-deprecation. Humor is prevalent in this story. Even while our heroine deals with the ups and downs of superpowered life she always has something witty to say. Before the end of the issue there is a little bonus comic featuring a side story about a character we first meet in the main story.
The art here reminds me of something you might have seen on a Nickelodeon cartoon in the late 90’s early 2000’s. It doesn’t have that sharp, everyone-is-a-model body style that you would see in most superhero comics, but that doesn’t hurt it at all. The faces are still expressive, maybe even more than they would be had they been drawn in the more common style. When it comes more unique art like the chances of characters having the same appearance is significantly lowered and in this comic, no one looks the same. One thing that might go unnoticed is the different outfits of the various people in this world, they are dressed like people you might actually see in those type of areas.

If you like women-led, especially superheroine stories you’ll want to get in on this. Also a good read if you like more down to earth, fish-out-of-water type stories.
