Slaughter Dollz #1 is a comic created by Steve Messenger. Two women with a penchant for killing are tasked with recovering a valuable object. This is an action tale dripping with blood that stars a couple of killer women with strong looks and personalities. The first lady we hear speak is Butcher Bunny; she is a very anxious with some additional quirks like an urge to kill and her main weapon is a cleaver. With her is Spooky Von Kat, she is more level-headed but does have a mean streak, her weapons of choice are throwing knives. Both of these ladies are trying to find a different line of work. This story begins in an alley where our heroines descend on a shady deal that is about to go down. From there things get violent before launching into a plot thick with standout moments, some humorous and others serious. The action here is very bloody and gory. The pacing is steady with this lengthy comic seeming longer than it is. The tone isn’t too serious overall with the injections of lightheartedness and comedy making this a balanced read. There are a few intense moments but it’s a mostly non-stressful. The dialogue is angry and witty with some intriguing conversations. They kind of talk like women on reality TV shows but way less airheaded. There are more than a few wordy pages but it is usually conversational so it isn’t too slow to read. This is a debut comic for a violent and sexy series that stars two fleshed-out characters that are more than just their looks.
The art here is drawn in a grittyish style with varying levels of detail. The coloring is done well with the range being realistically vast. There isn’t much in the way of scenery as this story mostly takes place in enclosed areas like an alley or a nightclub. These locations give off the atmosphere intended; the alley is dark and seedy with an air of danger while the nightclub feels exclusive and crowded. The backgrounds more often than not have scene elements in them which helps keep you locked into the moment. The expression level here is high which is great for a conversation-heavy comic. The range of looks is wide(though mostly angry) and they can change from panel-to-panel. The detail in the faces(and bodies) goes from high to low so the consistency isn’t there but it shouldn’t take you out of the story. The violence is very gruesome and bloody with some nasty moments but not all of it is shown. The action scenes are on the shorter side but there are more than a few of them. These women dress in skintight and revealing clothing the entire time and there are plenty of “sexy” panel angles.
