Sparrow #1 is a comic written and drawn by Kara Huset. After experiencing a tragedy at a young age, a girl was gifted with superpowers and must make a choice about using them. This comic’s star is a teenager named Alaina who is the daughter of two super parents. She also has a sister named Hannah who seems to be about four years younger than her. The plot here has a good amount of movement to it; this is a debut issue trying to lay a foundation for future issues and it does a good job. There is a lot to take in you might have to reread a couple of pages. This is well-paced issue that starts with a flashback then the story moves to the present. Action here is kinda light, but we’re just getting started. The dialogue is nice and realistic for the most part, you can hear these conversations in real life. A couple pages do get a lil word heavy but it’s not bad. There is also a bonus comic focusing on the past that is alluded to in the main story. All in all this is a good start to a young superhero series.
The location range here is wide and the backgrounds help set the scene. This comic is pretty expressive, and the facial details help sell the emotion. You won’t find any face sameness here, the variety is high. Now when it comes to the bodies I must admit that they sometimes look out of place, like the anatomy isn’t right or something. And it is noticeable. It won’t ruin your reading but it might catch you off guard. It’s hard for superhero costumes to look unique nowadays but they tried, the outfits don’t really bring any other superheroes to mind on first glance. The action isn’t hard to follow as there isn’t very much of it, but it does stick to the wall. No over-sexualization of characters to be found here.
