Super Kaiju Rock-n-Roller Derby Fun Time Go!: Balam Rising is a comic written by David Hedgecock with art by Rolo Mallada. A group of women who are both bandmates and teammates have big events to prepare for. This is a supernatural sports comic with plenty of drama, some action, and a nearly all-woman cast. The leading ladies are: the red-headed Harmony, Lyra with the afro, the blonde Melody, tatted-up Cadence, and the blue-haired Viola. All of these ladies are members of the Diva Demons roller derby team, but all of them except Viola are members of the band called The Burnouts. The story begins with the Diva Demons in the middle of a bout that they eventually lose. Afterwards in the locker room they talk to Harmony about her recent bad stretch of games and discuss their upcoming bout and band performance. This mainly takes place in California. The violence here can be very destructive with a small amount of blood but no gore. The pacing is steady with a dramatic tone. The intensity here is due to violence and danger. The dialogue is modern with a lot of back-and-forth. There are no word-heavy pages here. This is an exciting debut issue that introduces us to an intriguing cast of women who are trying to achieve their dreams while danger, both near and far, looms. There are some bonus comics here that tell us more about specific characters and the overall story.
The art here is stylized and very detailed with some well-done lighting and shading. The color range here is very wide though most have a darker and faded tone. While there are some shots of jungle and the ocean most of the scenery is of inner-city buildings and streets. The location changes frequently from the actual skating rinks to different locker rooms and to the members’ homes. There are some outdoor scenes that give a well-rounded view of the area. The backgrounds usually show the surroundings but occasionally it’ll be a purposely splotchy multicolored background. The expression level here is around average as these ladies can change looks on a panel-by-panel basis. The main emotions here are fear, sadness, anger, some happiness, and a good dose of shock. The detail in the faces can vary from decent to good and all the different expressions tend to come across clearly. The violence is physical and destructive with a bit of blood. The action scenes tend to come in short bursts and flow well. All the women here have large breasts and model-like looks.
