The Last Homicide #2 is a comic written by Frank Martin with art by Pietro Vaughan. A couple of detectives are working hard to find the culprit of a murder before a mob war breaks out. The story comes to a conclusion in this issue and it is full of twists, turns, and revelations. The senior detective is this pairing is Wilmer, a man on the verge of retirement who is trying to get this last case wrapped up. His partner is Gomez, a younger guy with a bit more energy. The victim of this murder is the son of a mob boss and it is looking like a rival mob boss is responsible. This case needs to be solved before a war breaks out and things get dangerous. The action here is about on the level of something you’d see on a crime show like Law & Order. Gunplay and strong arming abound. This gets pretty intense as they go from bad situation to bad situation in their search for justice. The dialogue sounds like what you’d hear in a crime drama with some nice back-and-forths. Except for a moment near the climax this comic doesn’t get wordy. This is a satisfying end to a mystery that has been served to us with a nice heap of drama on the side.
This comic isn’t in black-and-white but it is has very faded colors, none of them bright and it has significant use of shadows. The detectives move around a bit but the locations tend to not persist from panel-to-panel. The expression level here is reasonable when the faces are in focus; they can look a bit too blank otherwise. The faces here have varying degrees of detail and can appear to be stretched out at certain times which can throw you off. Matter of fact, sometimes the whole panel can look stretched and squished. And occasionally you will be tripped up as to whose face you are currently looking at. The action here does lead to some blood being shown and the scenes flow well.
