The Last Homicide #1 is a comic written by Frank Martin and illustrated by Pietro Vaughan. Detective Wilmer is all set to retire, but his last case is investigating the murder of mob boss Kitty Valerio’s son. What they were hoping would be a routine case seems primed to spiral out of control. This is a story that really grips you in the first few pages. If you’ve ever seen a mafia-inspired film you know what it’s supposed to look like when two families are close to throwing blows at the slightest affront and how the bystanders are left in the dark biting their nails. But that’s just one side of the story. On the other we have some cops attempting to solve a mystery and trying to prevent the inevitable. We follow detectives Wilmer and Gomez as they give due diligence in their quest to prevent this situation from getting any worse.
Let’s say you overlook the Mafioso undertones. Allow us to pretend that you’ve missed the gritty ear-to-the-streets police vibes. When you take one look at the art you will immediately understand the tone of this comic. Heavy shadows, obscured faces, muted colors, they all come together to emphasize the type of story this is. Some of the art in these panels looks like something one would see on a painting sitting in someone’s living room. And the facial expressions are done extremely well, they demand your attention.
“Is this worth reading?”
Yes.
“Would I like this?”
If you like gritty true crime or detective-carried mysteries this is up your alley. If you are a fan of mafia/mob stories this is worth your time.
“What would this comic’s film rating be?”
PG-13.
“Could I get a quote from the comic?”
“My son was murdered. Of course it’s a bad time.”
