The Last Owling #1 is a comic created by John Rhodes and published by Hyperverse Comics. Before we start, go and crack open a can of imagination. Let’s say Batman was a third-generation hero, and he was a she, and she was known as the Owling. You now have the gist of her character. This series takes in Philadelphia and I have no idea whether or not it connects to Nothing-Man. Owling is a plucky woman attempting to keep the streets safe while patrolling she runs into another woman named Brazen and fists(or sparks?) start to fly. This is origin story as most #1’s are and besides giving us a light feel on her personality we also get an inkling on who this series’ big bad might be. One thing I must say is that all the good guys so far are likable, which is a great way to start off.
The art style is very modern and smooth/shiny, not the 90’s inspired style seen in other Hyperverse stories. The fact that this takes place at night with the backdrop of buildings against the sky is lovely. Owling is dressed like Batman, except it’s a pink symbol on white everything else. Brazen wears a corset and pants, with the colors reminding me ever so slightly of Nightwing. Some of the enemies have specific outfits that let you know what team they’re on, for example one group dresses like waiters at a fancy restaurant. There are decent faces here, not as expressive as Hyperverse Comics is known for but expressive enough for it to add to their personalities.
“Is this worth reading?”
Yes.
“Would I like this?”
If you like superheroines and night-based stories you’d probably like this. And if you don’t mind knock-off/genderswaps of established superheroes.
“What would this comic’s film rating be?”
PG-13.
“Could I get a quote from the comic?”
“It’s bad karma to kill someone who saves you.”
