The Seems of a Dream is a comic created by Eric, Peter, and Daniel Curran. This is a six-issue miniseries and I will be reviewing the whole thing here, so buckle up. When reading this series it is imperative that you stay on your toes mentally. In this story we follow a man I won’t name for spoilers’ sake who is going through it. He is both in and out of a dream, seeing things that are and aren’t there, and his memory is shot. He has a little voice helping him and some glasses that allow him to see through the noise but it isn’t exactly a walk in the path. This takes place in a dystopian society with a worshipped leader and his own paramilitary force, a force that only exists to protect to the people, because as the Chairman says, “All who oppose us…oppose you.” Our main man must navigate this type of society in order to get the answers to his questions and wake up from this living nightmare. Now based the above description you may think this is one of those trippy, unreliable narrator, “This is like Inception” kind of stories. Though I did get a bit lost in the first issue and had to reread a few pages, after that it was smoothish sailing. You won’t get thrown off the designed path following this story but every now and then you’ll stumble a bit.
When a comic decides it will have a psychedelic feel with things appearing that aren’t really there and various other mental tricks, the art has to be able to keep up. And for the most part, it does! The art isn’t as sharp as a big name comic but it’s good enough that you can’t complain. The first issue of this series is in color while the rest is black-and-white. The first issue being color was very helpful in giving me some footing and getting the gist of what I was looking at before the color changed. The characters, both human and otherwise are drawn with quite a bit of personality. They have faces you can read like a book and the body language doesn’t shy away from telling tales of its own. This comic is big on the shadows, but that goes along with the noir feel.
Surprised? Normally I just do two paragraphs, one for the story and the second for the art, but we have something I’ve never seen before. A soundtrack! This comic has its very own music that can be listened to on SoundCloud. Some of the music sounds like it would be playing in the background of scenes as if it were a movie, while others sound like they’re what our main character is hearing in his head. Mostly techno bops with bass present and accounted for, you should have it playing while you read.
“Is this worth reading?”
Yes.
“Would I like this?”
If you like comics that make you think and question things we already know, go ahead and read this series. If you like amnesiac characters or those who don’t know what’s going on this is full of that. Dystopian fans may want to dabble.
“What would this comic’s film rating be?”
R. Not really in the first few issues, but later on it gets heavy.
“Could I get a quote from the comic?”
“That’s not fair…that was my ice cream.”
