The Seer Chronicles: Born in Fire is a comic written by Greg Moquin with art by Luke Anderson and colors by Febri Ferdian. An explosion at the Psycorp Labs causes ripple effects throughout Seer City. This is a science fiction comic with mystery and intrigue that stars a somewhat large cast. The main man here is a firefighter named John who puts the people first and himself second; he is not afraid to enter into dangerous situations. The secondary lead is an unnamed angry man who is trying to get treatment for his sick son. There are a few other characters that play important roles here including a scientist, a nurse, a detective, and some mysterious individuals. The story begins with at a fire station whose peace and quiet is interrupted due to an explosion on the Psycorp Labs. The situation is bad and getting worse when they arrive and tough decisions must be made. The action here is explosive with some hard hits, gruesome violence, and a bit of blood. The pace is steady and the tone is dramatic with it becoming melodramatic at points. There are intense moments of varying length with most of them a result of dangerous situations. The dialogue here is mostly conversational with a decent amount of aggression. There are no word-heavy pages here. This is a debut issue that gives us a large amount of characters to follow in a story with tangles and twists that’ll have you looking forward to what comes next.
The art here is very flat and rough with a strong focus on shading. The color range here is realistic with a nice variety per page. Aside from a few quick shots of grass and trees in a neighborhood most of the scenery you’ll see is of buildings and city streets. There are a few major locations here including the Psycorp Labs, Mandell General(a hospital), and the downtown area which has some seedy places. It’s almost a 50-50 split between the backgrounds showing the actual surroundings or just being a gradient color. The expression level here is above-average as these characters aren’t afraid to hide what they’re feeling. The emotional range is all over the place as there are very sad moments and very angry, rage-filled moments. The faces here have enough detail for the expressions to come across clearly but they lack consistency and are overall of a low quality. The bodies lack proportion with characters looking the same size in one panel but different sizes in the next. The violence is very explosive with hard-hits and hand-to-hand combat. There are some bloody and gruesome moments. The action scenes flow well and with them rarely being longer than a page.
