Vanya: The Lost Warrior #5 is a comic written by Mike Tener with illustrations by Zoran Jovicic and colors by Bryan Magnaye. Vanya and Serah are captured by the Bone Tribe whose leader is a former Time Guard. This is a futuristic science fiction comic with political drama, graphic sex, and gruesome violence. The leading lady here is Vanya, she is a Time Guard sent back to the past for survival training whose mission has changed after an invasion by the Torridians back in the future. Serah is Vanya’s friend who was sent back to the past after the initial invasion and they’ve been working together to find the hidden armories. Niya is a former Time Guard and member of the Bone Tribe who is their most skilled warrior. This story begins soon after their capture and with Vanya and Serah getting a bit of backstory on the Bone Tribe by the Bone King, the former Time Guard Vitor. After he is done with his spiel he gives them an example of Torridian technology, which he says was built to control. This takes place in a prehistoric time with dinosaurs and limited clothing. The violence is very gruesome with blood and gore. The pace goes from steady to speedy as there are a number of pages with little to no words. There are a mix of tones with a sci-fi space opera on one end and a jungle adventure on the other. The dialogue here is conversational with good back-and-forth and a modern talking style. There are no word-heavy pages here. This is a revealing issue as new characters appear, motivations are given, and situations take a turn for the dangerous.
The art here is smoothly detailed with a modern glossy look well done lighting and shading. The color palette is mostly dark from stone gray to skin brown. For scenery it is mainly rocky from mountainous areas to caves. The main location is the cave that the Bone Tribe calls home which is also where they do their various rituals. Another location we’ll go back to is the home base of the Astral Guards from the future. The backgrounds consistently show the actual surroundings which here are mostly gray. The expression level here is around average as we get some realistic reactions from the different characters. Emotions on display here are anger, annoyance, shock, and fear; this is outside of the sensual ones. The faces have an average to good amount of detail and usually show the various expressions clearly. Torridians have purple skin, are taller than humans, and are muscular with horse-like legs. The weapons used here include spears, axes, and firearms. There are many gruesome attacks that lead to heavy gore and a substantial amount of blood. The action scenes come in bursts and flow well. All the women have larges breasts but revealing/no clothes is the standard across the board.
