Vetita: Awakening is a comic written by Marcel Dupree & Joshua Metzger with art by Gaurav Shrivastava. A woman raised solely by her father finds out what her mother was up to. What was her mother up to? Vampires. She was a vampire hunter, stuff happened, and now her daughter Luna is about to join the family business. Luna is the main character but she knows nothing about anything due to her father keeping everything on the hush hush. You will see quite a few otherworldly creatures here. The plot isn’t really unique; if you’ve consumed any media about vampires hunting their own race then you’ll get the vibes of this story. And hands are being thrown constantly. Sometimes there are weapons but it eventually boils down to fist-to-fist combat. This comic is fast-paced and to the point. The dialogue is modern and not bogged down with old English like other vampire tales. This is a thick comic so a few wordy pages are expected but it never gets bothersome. This is a vampire hunting comic with an air of mystery but nothing that’ll knock your socks off. It might stretch the elastic though.
Aside from the obviously supernatural elements the overall comic is drawn realistically. Locations matter here and the interiors are drawn with small details that make the room seem more than just a backdrop. The exteriors help set the mood for the current scene. This isn’t the most expressive comic but it is decent. They hit the major looks but the smaller ones in-between are hit-or-miss. Face sameness is prevalent here, but that’s only if you look close. The otherworldly creatures look cool and purposefully look out of place in the world. Skintight outfits, blades, you know what vampire hunter gear looks like. The action scenes are heavy-handed and gruesome. Not for the squeamish at all. Are the women here oversexualized? Well besides the fact that they could use a bit more clothing and the occasional low-angle shot it’s not a problem.
