Witch’s Flesh #1 is a comic written by Marcel Dupree with art by JC Fabul, and colors by Riri Mashuri with letters by Guido Martinez and Zheanhmeart as a co-creator. In a world populated by dinosaurs and supernatural beings we find a woman just trying to get through the day. This is a comic full of action taking place in a fantasy world and starring a wide-eyed lead. The lead in questions is Dorei, an adventurous woman with a seemingly tragic past who now finds herself being raised by a woman named Master Sagi. Sagi is a mysterious person who doesn’t like to explain her actions but that doesn’t deter Dorei from asking. The plot begins with Dorei out hunting using interesting methods and it gives a good look at her personality which is quite upbeat. The world looks a lot like ours and the dinosaurs look familiar but I’m no enthusiast so I can’t determine if they’ve been fantasized. The action is very bloody and you will see guts splayed about. The pacing is pretty steady as no moment seems rushed and everything appears to be as long as it should be. There are a few intense moments spread out as things do get dangerous for these characters. The dialogue has different tones depending on who is conversing with who; for example Dorei sometimes sounds like a worshipper when speaking to Master Sagi. No wordy pages here, if anything it is a below average amount. This is a debut issue packed with excitement and interesting characters that have backstories you might like to take a closer look at.
This is a very detailed art style with a decent range of colors with most of them being of the brown family as this story takes place in a prehistoric-like setting. The scenery is mostly mountains and cliffs with the occasional trees. While two of the main locations are rock-heavy the other is a village that looks to be inhabited by a nomadic people. The expression-level here is slightly below-average with the faces seeming a bit stiff like the emotions are being help back. The faces are drawn with enough detail and there is a good focus on features like lips and eyes, so it is a bit disappointing we don’t get to see too many different looks. Sometimes the bodies of the characters aren’t proportional and the angles will seem off. The creatures are drawn with great specificity from the teeth down to the striations. The mystical effects used are very bright so you won’t miss it. The action scenes are of varying length and are hard-hitting. They do get bloody and are unafraid to show full gore. Occasionally the action sequences will seem disjointed and you will question how they got from A to B. Dorei wears a pretty classic “jungle girl” outfit and Master Sagi’s only article of clothing is a necklace.
