Yum Toast #1 is a comic created by Terrell Culbert. An investigative journalist tracks a serial killer whose next attack might be close by. This is a supernatural superhero comic with strong mystery elements, a decent amount of drama, and violence. The leading lady for this tale is Lisa Irma, she is an investigative journalist who has helped the police solve a number of cases and she is currently on the trail of the serial killer called “Yum Toast”. Detective Blue is the main man on the case and he is not a fan of vigilantes. The story begins with Lisa recounting the case up until this point and giving us a glimpse of what goes on in these apartments. Her night becomes more interesting when the vigilante Rocky Devil shows up. The violence here is physical with some blood but no gore. The pacing is steady with plenty of fast moments. The tone is slightly gritty and mysterious with a couple violently intense moments. There is a good deal of back-and-forth conversation here with narration by Lisa and Detective Blue. There are no word-heavy pages. This is a debut issue that sets up an exciting mystery with an interesting cast and it will leave the reader with more than a few questions.
The art here is detailed and semi-cartoonish with thick outlines, notable shading, and silhouetting. The color range is realistic but not very wide. This story takes place in and around shabby and rough apartment buildings with practically no natural scenery to speak of. The buildings have cracks in the walls, missing paint, and dirty floors. The backgrounds are split between showing the surroundings or just being a solid color like black or yellow. The expression level here is above-average as these characters can get animated. The frequent emotions here are happiness, anger, fear, and inquisitive looks. The faces have a good amount of detail and the looks come across clearly. The violence here is physical with pooling blood but no gore or gruesome attacks. The action scene has a decent amount of panels with good flow. All the women here have model-like looks with large breasts and butts and there are some interesting “camera” angles.
