Bulletproof Chicken is a comic written by Jon Westhoff with art by Bobgar Ornelas and Mat Nixon with colors by David Halvorson. A pair of rooster detectives go up against a gang of lizards led by one of their own. This is a comic that is equal parts crime and mystery wrapped up a thick story. The older member of this rooster pair is Ed Gallo and he’s been on the job for some time and is days from retirement. The younger rooster is nicknamed BP for Bulletproof and he is married to a hen named Lisa. The story begins with the pair violently entering a restaurant and soon after the bullets start flying. After dealing with the people out front they make their way to the back. There are strong buddy cop vibes here with the mid-battle jokes and tough guy statements. This story takes place in a world of anthropomorphic animals. The action here is very gory and bloody with limb separation and eyes not in their sockets. The pacing is steady with plenty of subtle and overtly intense moments. The tone shifts from serious a few times during this story. The dialogue is almost entirely conversational and aggressive. There are not word-heavy pages here. This is a debut comic that seems to have a comedic premise but ends up being a gritty and serious look at crime and its effects.

            The art here is cartoonish and looks like it could be from a children’s book(not an insult) which makes the tone of the material hit harder. The color range is wide with them occasionally having a faded look. We don’t really see any scenery as this story takes place inside buildings and in urban environments. The location goes from restaurants to offices and factories with all of these places having unique atmospheres. The panel backgrounds usually show the scene but can end up being a solid or gradient color. The expression level here is slightly above-average as the looks are shown well despite the beaks. The emotions are all over the place as there are plenty of sad moments mixed with angry ones, genuine happiness is rare. You won’t have to guess at the emotions for the most part. All the lizards are bald but the chickens have hair. The violence here is gory and gruesome with body parts everywhere, pools of blood, and a large amount of loose eyeballs. The action scenes flow well with a lot to look at in each panel. The lizards wear pants, the chickens do not.

If you like buddy cop/crime stories starring chickens with a large amount of blood and gore as well as some drama and sci-fi elements then this is for you.
