Seidr #1 is a comic written by Michael Nunneley with art by Tosin Awosika. A group of Vikings go on a raid that takes a turn and they must deal with the fallout. This is a Norse tale with supernatural elements and drama. The leading lad for this story is King Ingvar; he is leading this raid on Falster Island with 280 men and women. Among this number are Ingvar’s brother Lars and Ingvar’s son Erik. The plot is pretty straightforward; some Vikings are going on a raid that they do somewhat regularly. When they arrive on the island they see things they normally don’t. This takes place in our world but in the past when these things were going on. There are themes of revenge and betrayal present. The action scenes are very bloody and gory with flying heads and other gruesome moments. The pacing is slightly slower-than-average as most of the dialogue is narration. The tone is serious for the majority of this comic with frequent intense moments throughout. There is the occasional typo and there are sentences and words in a European language, I don’t know which one it is. There aren’t any word-heavy pages but narration does read slower. This is a debut comic that drops us in the middle of a fight and provides us with excitement, violence, and drama.
The art here has a gritty and rough look to it with a style reminiscent of comics from the 70’s/80’s. The shading here is good and the range of colors is wide. The scenery consists of large bodies of water, rocky shores, and thick forests. Though the location changes from boats to tents to random buildings the main spot is just somewhere outside whether that is by the sea or deeper inland. The backgrounds almost always show a part of the scene like the sky or room interiors. The expression level here is slightly below-average as even when they show emotion it isn’t far-off from their normal face. The range here is mostly anger and rage with the rare sad and somber moment. The faces have a decent amount of detail with different beard and hair colors lowering the confusion from the noticeable face sameness. The mystical effects have a bright and ethereal look. The violence here is very bloody with beheading-focused gore and some gruesome moments. The action scenes flow well and feature packed battles.
