Succi #1 is a comic written by Chris Moses with pencils by Riccardo Cecchi, inks by Lola Brunetti, and colors by Marcos Martins. Succi is summoned by a man to free his people oppressed by powerful non-human beings. This is a supernatural science fiction story with strong violence, desperate drama, and clear inspiration from Egyptian mythology. The main man here is Ushar, he has some sort of magical abilities and he is forced to work mining gold like the rest of his people. Succi is a powerful demon with fighting skills and she is constantly at odds with her sisters. This story begins with Ushar, his friend Paqadu, and the rest of their people toiling in the mines gathering gold. After watching Ushar use his ability to punch through stone to retrieve gold Paqadu tells him that many would follow him if they knew what he was capable of, but Ushar says that it’s a curse that feels like it’s calling out to him. This takes place in world with magic anthropomorphic animals(in an Egyptian style) are not shocking and I’m not even sure if this is earth. The violence is brutal with some gruesome moments and a significant amount of blood. The pacing is steady with a sort of historical fiction/supernatural fantasy-like tone. This is more dramatically intense than violent though there are moments that blend the two. The dialogue is conversational and spoken in a proper English style with decent back-and-forth. There are no word-heavy pages. This is an intriguing and exciting debut issue that will show the reasons behind the initial summoning of Succi to the human realm and its violent aftermath.
The art here is drawn in a smoothly detailed modern style with a strong focus on lighting and shading. The color palette is made up of primarily faded and darker tones but there are some light and bright ones. For scenery there is a rocky valley with caves which is where the mining happens. The main location is the floating building where these non-human beings reside and it has a throne room and lab full of ancient-futuristic technology. Hell is also visited as well as Ushar’s home. Backgrounds here are usually gradient colors with optional action lines though sometimes the actual surroundings are shown, usually in the foreground. The expression level here is a bit above average as these characters tend to react to everything. Emotions we’ll see here include fear, anger, shock, rage, confusion, and unbridled happiness(from Succi). The faces have an above-average amount of detail and can occasionally get a bit cartoonish result in clear expressions overall. The non-human beings look like creatures from Egyptian mythology and are significantly taller than the average human. Swords and spears are the main weapons used here. There are many gruesome attacks that lead to a large amount of blood but no gore. The action scenes come in bursts of at least two pages with an overall smooth flow as some battles have high panel counts. Most of the women here are curvy and have large breasts and are wearing very little clothing, with some lewd poses and angles.
